چکیده
Introduction Traditionally, one of the usages of the prefix po(often called delimitative or attenuative) is associated with some characteristic of an event being lower than the expected value: an event lasting for a short period of time, a small quantity of the theme consumed, etc. According to Filip (2000, pp. 47–48) “[t]he prefix pocontributes to the verb the [. . .] meaning of a small quantity or a low degree relative to some expectation value, which is comparable to vague quantifiers like a little, a few and vague measure expressions like a (relatively) small quantity / piece / extent of.”

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian
Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...
متن کاملThe Bottleneck of Second Language Acquisition
Explaining why some linguistic features and constructions are easy or difficult to acquire in a second language has become a prominent current concern in generative second language acquisition (SLA) research. Based on a comparison of findings on the L2 acquisition of functional morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, the Bottleneck Hypothesis argues that functional morphemes and their fea...
متن کاملMeaning Potentials and the Interaction between Lexis and Contexts: An empirical substantiation
This article is a contribution to a theory of lexical semantics and situated sense-making which aims at explaining how meaning is constituted in and across contexts, in a dialogical interplay between lexical resources and aspects of situations. We propose that the semantics of words or grammatical constructions are not just abstract schemas, to be filled in by pragmatic enrichment in situated u...
متن کاملSemantics and Pragmatics of Monkey Communication1
Rich data gathered in experimental primatology in the last 40 years are beginning to benefit from analytical methods used in contemporary linguistics, especially in the area of semantics and pragmatics. These methods have started to clarify five questions: (i) what morphology and syntax, if any, do monkey calls have? (ii) what is the 'lexical meaning' of individual calls? (iii) how are the mean...
متن کاملExplanation and Partiality in Semantic Theory∗
In this paper, I shall argue for a form of partiality in semantics. In particular, I shall argue that semantics, narrowly construed as part of our linguistic competence, is only a partial determinant of content. Likewise, semantic theories in linguistics function as partial theories of content. I shall go on to offer an account of where and how this partiality arises, which focuses on how lexic...
